Michael Charnisky Obituary

Michael Francis Charnisky, 97, of Nokomis, Illinois, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2024, at Treemont Ridge Assisted Living. A pillar of the Nokomis community, Michael lived a life defined by service, dedication, and love for his family and town.

Michael was born on March 4, 1927, to Michael and Elizabeth (Guidish) Charnisky in Whiting, IN. His family later relocated to Coalton, IL. Michael attended St. Louis Catholic School and Nokomis High School. His commitment to serving his country led him to join the U.S. Navy on February 16, 1945, where he proudly served in World War II. For his service, he was awarded the Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, and American Area Campaign Medal.

After his honorable discharge, Michael pursued higher education, earning an associate's degree from a junior college. On November 5, 1950, he married the love of his life, Janice McConiga, at St. Louis Catholic Church. Their union lasted a remarkable 73 years. The couple was blessed with one daughter, Jan Michelle, born April 30, 1953, who sadly preceded her father in death on July 14, 2023.

Michael's professional life was marked by entrepreneurship and dedication. He was the owner of Melin-Charnisky insurance before joining Tosetti & Associates, where he worked for a decade. His business acumen was matched only by his commitment to public service. Michael served on the Nokomis City Council and was elected mayor, serving from 1997 to 2001. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Nokomis Lions Club, American Legion Post 94, and the Nokomis Memorial Park Association.

Known for his generosity, kindness, patience, and soft-spoken nature, Michael was an accepting individual who touched many lives. His passions included golf and meticulously caring for his lawn. He was a proud owner of a Riviera, owning car number 88 in its final year of manufacture. Michael was known for his spirited driving in this cherished vehicle.

A devoted grandfather, Michael never missed a basketball game of his granddaughter Ryan, following her career through high school and college. His unwavering support and presence were a testament of his love for Ryan.

Michael is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Janice; his brother, John (Barbara) Charnisky of Edwardsville, IL; granddaughter Ryan (Melissa) Danner of Louisville, KY; and nieces Lisa (Sean) Strader, Krista (Vic) Capron, and Michael (Elle) Charnisky.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 10, 2024, from 10 AM to 12 PM at St. Louis Catholic Church. A funeral Mass will follow at 12 PM, with Father Michael Meinhart presiding. Michael will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Louis Catholic Church, a place close to Michael's heart.
