Joseph Gonet Obituary

Joseph C. Gonet, 85 of Coalton, Illinois passed away Monday, July 27, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family. Joe the son of Hubert and Mary (Pintar) Gonet was born January 7, 1935 in Coalton, IL.

Joe married Marilyn McElroy June 4, 1955 in St. Louis Catholic Church, Nokomis, IL. "celebrating 65 years of marriage this year" and she survivres as do children Cheryl Bennett of Nokomis, IL., Joran Bachtold of Chatham, IL., Steve (Jennifer) Gonet of Grass Valley, CA., Edward (Sidney) Gonet of Petersburg, IL., grandchildren Nathan (Jennifer) Braye of Campbell, CA., Matthew (Tracey) Braye of Brownsboro, AL, Amy (Travis) Hough of Elmhust, IL., Olivia Bachtold and Austin Bachtold both of Chatham, IL., Jeanee' Gonet of Tahoe City, CA., Julianne (Nathan) Booye of San Diego, CA., August Gonet of New York, N.Y., Luke Gonet, Anna Lowenthal both of Springfield, IL., great grandchildren Jonah Braye, Avenley Horner, D. J. Horner, Drake Horner, Brock Horner, Ava Lindsey, Ryan Hough, Natalie Hough, a sister Priscilla Gonet of Nokomis and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by siblings Hubert (Hugh) Gonet, Hortense (Tootie) Guyot, Henry (Coose) Gonet, Annabelle and Mary (Babe) Thomas.

Joe worked as a barber for over 62 years recently retiring in 2018. He cut hair at The Nokomis Nursing Home and the Litchfield Hospital on his day off. He was active on the Coalton Village Board for 43 years. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church all of his life attending Mass every Sunday and was devoted to saying the Rosary. He prayed the Rosary with a special  group every week at the Grotto behind Pana Hospital for years. He coached the St. Louis Hawks Basketball team, Nokomis Little League, Pony League and American Legion baseball. He enjoyed golf, water skiing & taught children, friends & relatives to ski on Lake Taylorville for many years. He was an avid Nokomis Redskins sports fan never wanting to miss a game. He followed Virginia Tech, Notre Dame and the St. Louis Cardinals. He was an outdoorsman and loved to hunt, fish and raised bird dogs all his life.  He belonged to the Nokomis Jaycees, booking bands at the South School Gym such as Head East, REO Speedwagon and many more back in the 1960's. He was a master gardener. He shared of his time; always willing to lend a hand, sharing his love of organic fruits and vegetables with family and friends.

He was a dedicated family man, loyal and faithful husband. He will be missed by his family and close friends.
