Helen Poteet Obituary

Helen Louise Poteet, 97, of Nokomis, passed away surrounded by her family on January 26, 2026, at her daughter’s home in Florida.

Helen was born on December 22, 1928, in Coalton, Illinois, to Marko and Emma (Dwarsack) Adams. For most of Helen’s life, she was a homemaker, but later worked as a cafeteria cook for Nokomis High School. Helen married Dewey Poteet Jr., and he preceded her in death on March 31, 2009. She was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church. She was an avid quilter and also a member of the quilting club at the St. Louis Catholic Church.

Helen is survived by her children: Cheryl (Terry) Milt of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; Carol (Dave) Schall of Naples, Florida; and Mark (Christi) of Lebanon Illinois; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her faithful companion, Lucy.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dewey Poteet Jr.; her brothers, Ozzy and Hap Pretnar; and 1 grandchild.

A Catholic Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Louis Catholic Church in Nokomis on Monday, February 9th, 2026, beginning at 11:00 AM, with Father Michael Meinhart officiating. A visitation will be prior to that at 10:00 AM. Burial will take place in Nokomis Cemetery. A visitation will be held one hour prior to Mass at the church.

Memorial donations in Helen’s honor can be made to St. Louis Catholic Church, Nokomis. Stiehl-Dawson Funeral Home in Nokomis is assisting the family with arrangements.
