Gary Dodson

Gary “Red” Dodson, 71, of Newton, Illinois formally of Nokomis Illinois, passed away on May 6th, 2026, at Carle Hospital in Urbana, Illinois.

Born April 25th, 1955, in Hillsboro, Illinois, to Nova Edward and Gwendolyn Mae (Niesler) Dodson, Gary grew up with a strong work ethic and a heart full of kindness. A graduate of Nokomis High School’s class of 1973, he devoted over 30 years as a skilled diesel mechanic with Ameren, touching many lives through his dedication before retiring in 2014.

On November 25th, 1978, Gary married the love of his life, Kathy Ann (Porter) Dodson, sharing decades of laughter, love, and family joy.

He is survived and will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Kathy; children Aaron (Jill) Dodson of Effingham, Illinois, and Sarah (Michael) Sheahan of Katy, Texas; treasured grandchildren Madelyn, Colin, and Conor Sheahan; beloved step-grandchildren Evan Nerone of Champaign and Emma (June) Thomas of Quaker just outside of Sydney, Australia; and his dear sisters Brenda Clavin of Nokomis and Joyce Stoddard of Quincy; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Sandy Gibson and Norma Niemi.

Gary’s heart was happiest when spending time with his grandchildren — swimming, playing ball, or sharing simple moments of joy. His passion for Cardinals baseball and Blues hockey brought him endless excitement, just like drag racing, fishing, and traveling. He was known for his quick wit and warm humor, Gary’s smile and good-natured jokes brightened the lives of everyone around him.

A ceremony for Gary Dodson will be held Tuesday, May 12th at 2:00 p.m. with a visitation immediately following until 4:00 pm at Stiehl-Dawson funeral home in Nokomis with celebrant Brandi Klughart officiating.
 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The American Heart Association or The American Cancer Society.
