Esther Marie (Quattlander) DeWerff, 99, of Nokomis, died April 1, 2019 at 1:10 P.M. at her daughters home in Wilton, Iowa, surrounded by her family.
Esther was born at home in rural Nokomis, IL, to the late William and Henrietta (Janssen) Wattjes Quattlander on September 8, 1919. She and Melvin W. DeWerff were married by Pastor C F Lehenbauer on June 4, 1941 in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Nokomis. Melvin preceded her in death on July 23, 1983. Esther was a homemaker and farm wife. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where she had also taught Sunday School.
She is survived by her children, Judith (Rev. Daniel) Ognoskie, Wilton, Iowa; Diane (Blayne) Hill, Nokomis; David (Karol) DeWerff, Nokomis; grandchildren, Michelle & Katie Ognoskie, Dawn (Kevin) Mascher, Beth (Frank) Steele, Courtney Hill, Eric (Cassie) DeWerff, Kayla (Zach) Lyons, Ryan DeWerff & Holly DeWerff. Great-grandchildren, Nicholas & Kristen Mascher, Colten, Brody, Riley & Remy Steele, Gavin & Naomi DeWerff, Leon, Maddox, Nelson and Odin Lyons. Sisters-in-law Alberta Quattlander & Doris Smith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings, Gerhardt Wattjes, Minnie Zuberbier, Richard Wattjes, Viola Meier and Ivan Quattlander.
Services will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Nokomis on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Christen Prumm officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. at the church prior to the service.
