Darwin D. Matthews

Darwin D. Matthews 78 of Nokomis, Illinois passed away Monday May 4, 2021 at Carle Hospital, Urbana, Illinois.  The son of Lonnie and Opal (Funderburk) Matthews he was born May 11, 1942 in Hillsboro, Illinois.  He married Brenda Michael June 5, 1965 at the First Baptist Church, Nokomis. She survives as do sons Darren (Rhonda) Matthews of Miami, FL., Doug (Monica) Matthews of Smithville, TN., daughter Dana (Zach) Mizeur of Taylorville, IL., grandchildren Samantha Barnett, Kyle McQuillan, Ryan Matthews, Amber Matthews, Caleb and Sophia Mizeur and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Dennis Matthews.

Darwin was in the US Marine Corps for 4 years, 1960 to 1964. He worked for Firestone Tire and Rubber company for nine years. In 1971 he started his business as owner/operator of Matthews Backhoe Service retiring in 2010. He was a member of Local 520 IUOE, Nokomis Masonic Lodge, Nokomis Lions Club and Nokomis Sportsman's Club Darwin had a great work ethic and moral values and passed these to his children. He loved Nascar (#3). He had "a one-of-a-kind sense of humor" (you probably have a story).

Funeral services will be held Friday May 7, at 10:30 am at Stiehl-Dawson Funeral Home, Nokomis with visitation Thursday evening from 5 to 8 pm also at the funeral home. Burial at Nokomis Cemetery with full military honors.by Nokomis American Legion and the US Marines. Memorials are suggested to Grace Baptist Church and Nokomis Cemetery Assn.  Brenda and her family request you attend in casual attire.
